WANT TO HAVE SOME FUN?

Ever work for one of those gloomy companies that you didn’t know what your superiors wanted? Or if they told you what they wanted, it was different from what they told you yesterday. And you know it could change again tomorrow, or it conflicts with what someone else told you!

Or how about those performance reviews where you knew you performed well only to find out at the review that someone had expected something different from you? Life at such a company just kind of goes on complete with disputes, backbiting, confusion, finger pointing and, of course, stress. It kind of reminds you of the saying “Firings will continue until moral improves”.

Do you want or even need your company to become an enjoyable experience, a fun place and something you look forward to each morning? If you could make such a transformation at your company, would that be worth it to you, your coworkers and your company’s bottom line? ISO 9001 has been the answer for many companies. Let me explain.

At least one company outright told the Registrar that they implemented ISO 9001 for the “Fun Factor”. They wanted to reduce the problems at the work place that made life at work such a drag. For most companies, they didn’t even know about this “Fun Factor” until they were well into the implementation of the standard.

The key to having fun with ISO 9001 is realizing the key requirements of the standard. These are communication, consistency of purpose and process, and continual improvement. If these concepts are truly implemented, life at the company must and will get better for everyone.

Let me give you some explanations:
The opposite of having a dependable structure and system in place is having a state of chaos in place. Chaos means that a company has conflicting goals, inconsistent processes, lack of responsibilities, and little understanding of authorities. Management may wonder why a job is not getting done or not profitable will end up blaming everyone else for it. For too many companies this is a typical scenario. The real problem oftentimes is lack of systems.

Without a system, a company is left with a certain degree of chaos, confusion and a “not my job” approach to getting things done. When managers take the time to develop a system, communicate responsibilities, they begin to become a team which is always more profitable - and fun.

The ISO 9001 standard requires that a company determine their overall goals. These goals become the mission of the company that all employees can know and support. Without a communicated goal or mission each department and even well intentioned employees develop their own goals for the company. When everyone develops their own differing and potentially competing goal, this only causes additional conflicts and leads to competition against your coworkers instead of the real business competitors.

Next, all the processes within a company are defined to ensure that a sound structure is in place to fulfill its’ customer’s orders, covering all requirements or needs. If everyone is performing the same task differently on different days, problems and difficulties can be next to impossible to resolve. All that is left is who to blame for today’s problems. The objective of an ISO 9001 system is to achieve consistency. With everyone performing the same process or function consistently, managing the function becomes easier, less costly and certainly less taxing on both management and employees.

When the defined responsibilities are added to defined processes, a SYSTEM has been developed. Systems can be managed, understood and communicated.

Communications are also an important part of a successful ISO 9001 system. People work better with each other when responsibilities, expectations and work requirements are communicated. Communications and understandings are essential for an atmosphere of appreciation.

But ISO 9001 also requires communication of how effective systems and processes are. This ongoing feedback from management informs everyone in the company. Otherwise, the only feedback that people may be getting is at review time. Reviews can be important, but without the information that an ISO 9001 system can provide, reviews become more subjective.

Demoralization also occurs when the same problems re-occur day after day and nobody is responsible or takes the initiative to provide for the fix which is often simple. ISO 9001 requires that problems be identified and that solutions be put into action. It also requires that such problems be revisited for effectiveness. No more “putting up with”, or constantly complaining about, or “turning a blind eye to” annoying, avoidable problems.

Finally, ISO 9001 systems provide the foundation for fun and effective teamwork, give everyone the knowledge that management cares and that their responsibilities are important too.
If you are looking for a better company to work for, STOP WRITING THE RESUME and start implementing ISO 9001 right where you are!
